At €395 I can't see it catching on too much, but it is an interesting way to do things. It'll probably be a niche product like Rotor cranks (The ones where one crank is ahead of top dead centre while the other one is at bottom dead centre).

Once there's a 44T chainring and they tweak it to fit non ISCG frames and it's been tested to survive all day high torque without wearing too quickly it could meet my requirements nicely...

It also amuses me that people have got so accustomed to 1 x 11 that the lack of change in chain line when changing chainrings is considered an advantage from the point of view of chain wear...

I can see this getting clogged with mud pretty easily - wouldn't fancy it myself. Really nice little machine though.

Why would people think that 1x11 would result in less chain wear? Surely everybody knows that you're being forced into cross-running gears with that setup? (Not that I'm attacking it - I dare say the trade-off is worth it for some people).

SRAM are now onto 12 speed with a 10-50 Tooth cassette. Rather than calling it XX2, they're calling it XX1 Eagle and the crank, shifter, chain and cassette will cost €1500 - or 1000ish for the XO version... The 500% gear range is already bigger than any 2 ring Shimano setup that isn't 11 speed. I'm just wondering whether there's enough ground clearance under the longer cage derailleur carrying a 50T ring for people who haven't moved to 29" wheels.

Since my granny ring doesn't get use except for as a chain catcher, a 400% gear range seems to be adequate for the cycling I do. my 24-32-44 chainrings and 11-32 cassette give a 533% range. Getting more gear range isn't that useful beyond that - though If I spent lots of time grinding up alpine climbs - not the road ones, they're mostly easier going than the mountain roads here - I would make a lot more use of low gears.

I could nearly get this range with a 11-36 cassette and 1 ring, but I don't like the 11-13 gear jump on this one - which annoyingly also shows up on the 11 speed XT 11-42 cassette and is bigger again on the 10-11T jump on XX1, so no incentive to go 1x11 on this either. The big uneven jumps between gears are the reason I don't like SRAM cassettes in the first place anyway and the 11-42 isn't massively closer spaced than the SRAM one. There's nothing more distracting than having to remember where you are in the cassette so that you know to shift earlier or later than usual as the step is different to other gears on the same cassette. The Shimano 11-32 does an excellent job of keeping this linear enough that I don't notice (It's not perfect since whole numbers of teeth have to be selected for each gear, but it's done well enough). The 11-28 cassette is noticeably more linear, especially in higher gears, though there's a big (Or normal sized for most MTB cassettes) 24-28T jump at the bottom to provide a bailout gear.

I currently have 13 gears available with a decent chainline between 1:1 and 4:1 on 2 chainrings. Going to a 11-28 road cassette to bring the granny ring back in play while still hanging on to a bailout gear under 1:1 and getting 15 well spaced ratios over a 400% gear range does look like a good option... The only worry is that it won't clear mud as well as a MTB cassette.
