Club News!

Postby dannyk » 14 Oct 2013, 12:05

Hi all,
New thread suggested by our secretary Zaria to keep everyone up to date with important stuff going on in the club, including some behind the scenes stuff!
Could someone make it a sticky?

Starting us off, we'll soon be taking delivery of this: http://www.yt-industries.com/shop/en/Bikes/Trail/Wicked-650B , a brand new Enduro bike!

We've also got a GPS unit in the pipeline so we can start mapping some of our cooler spins and make them easier to head out and ride.

Finally, in November, 4 of our committee - Myself, Zaria, Tom, and Alan will be doing Trail Cycle Leader training which should help us run even safer, better organised and more fun spins in the future :D

Tuesday 3rd December:
Sooo, loads of stuff been going on. First of all, it's been a brilliant semester - two great trips away, most recently our trip to wicklow which I think was one of the best club trips so far :D There's also been plenty of ye out at weekends and helping out on our maintenance evenings which is fantastic!
Just 10 days ago, three of our committee - Myself, Tom, and Zaria did a Trail Cycle Leader training course, and hope to be assessed and qualified sometime next semester - this gave us some great insight for getting our new beginners going next year :)

In addition to all this, we now have our accommodation for Les Gets confirmed, as well as the Ferry booked and all the Flights as well!

I've got a few of the common routes mapped on my runtastic profile, and I can export those to other formats handily enough.

Thanks for the links lads.
Great maintenance evening there on wednesday at the boathouse! - All of the Canyon hardtails are now running Shimano Deore's instead of the awful Elixir 1s :D Loads of other bits and bobs fixed as well :)

Awesome news - We've just been granted ~€1000 towards purchase of a new 16 bike transport trailer :D
Hopefully we should be taking delivery of this in time for christmas!

Update on the new YT Enduro rig - currently somewhere in DHL's hands so should be with us for next weekend :)

Game of 'Fuck the Dealer' perchance? 8)
So a man walks into a bar, and orders 10 times as many drinks as everyone else.

The barman says to him, 'Now that...is an order of magnitude.'

That was actually a pretty fun game, and this is a good a reason as any for getting completely fucked up, so yeah, might as well. You can organise the cards and the people, I'll do the drinking :)

I'm going to assume you went for a double a meaning behind 'organise the cards' and tip my hat to a witty retort, but if you did, you have to know that it was just the beast of the game and lady luck did not shine on you. Agreed that it is a good laugh though.

I had too, but I played it recently, one person starts with the deck and the player to your right names a card. The dealer checks the top card, and then lets the player know whether it is higher or lower than the initial guess, upon which the player can guess once more before the card is revealed.

Correctly guessing initially accrues the dealer five sips of their beverage, and on the second chance two sips. The player must drink as many sips after the second as guess as that guess was away from the actual value of the card (Ace = 1, pictures have values 11, 12, 13).

The dealer must get three people to not guess the card correctly at either attempt to pass the deck on to the player to the right, the count resets if someone does. Sets of four cards are turned over to prevent players from needlessly guessing a card that cannot come up. With ten cards to go, or with a savant in your cohort, it can become pretty drink heavy for the dealer, as possibilities narrow.
So a man walks into a bar, and orders 10 times as many drinks as everyone else.

The barman says to him, 'Now that...is an order of magnitude.'

Did you purposely "forget" this little rule last time? I remember fives all night long

Not that I really mind.

Also, I am convinced that initial card position has a lot to do with it, especially with a small group, like we had. Ciaran, sitting opposite me, started dealing every time. Most rounds the deck went around 1.5 times and ended with me. For the sake of fairness I demand that starting position rotate every round.

The wicked has arrived! :D Saw the box in the SU earlier. Dan said he would pick up it up with his car later. The Wednesday spin may be changed from Ballyhoura to somewhere more suitable for it, so we can have a club test day.

New bike storage system has been installed in the boathouse today. We've also repositioned the trailer and some other things. The new system is easier to use, more organised and provides more space. :D See the pics below. Just from my phone for now but we'll get some better ones up soon enough. Also I apologise for the size of the pics, I know some people don't like em that big.

Hey everyone

To those of you new to the club welcome and to those returning welcome back. Last night we kicked off the year with an AGM. We elected a new committee, discussed the new boathouse management and talked about up and coming trips.

Firstly, the new committee is as follows:
President - Paul Hanley
Secretary - Davin O'Connor
Treasurer - Eoin Horgan
Health and Safety - Sarah Jennings
Trips Officer - Cian Newport
PRO - William Flaherty
Mechanic/Equipment Officer - Tomasz Dziuban
Web Admin - Cathal Ferris
Web Moderators - Eoin Horgan, Tom Torode
Spare Person - Daragh Heffernan

Best of luck you guys!

Secondly, there is going to be a change in the use of the boathouse. As it stands, the only purpose of the boathouse is to accommodate a small number of clubs in training and storing gear. This year the UL Sports Arena will be taking over the boathouse with the hope of generating revenue to pay for the boathouse. The gym, meeting rooms, changing facilities, etc. will be run by the arena and available for public use. This may come with a change in how the boathouse is operated on a day to day basis.

Next we have trips away. There will be two trips this semester - at the end of week 5 and the end of week 9. The first trip will be to Carlingford. We'll be leaving Friday evening and coming back Sunday evening. Definitely a recommended trip with mostly XC spins and some downhill/enduro tracks too! The second trip will be to Wicklow. It'll be considered a more advanced trip, with some seriously gnarly natural trails. More details will be emailed out in the next few weeks.

We'll be having an uplift day to Fairymount too. For those of you who don't know - Fairymount is a spot with a series of downhill trails and uplifts to do all the climbing for you. Recently they've added a number of new trails, increasing their variety. Look it up - there's lots of videos online of what can be expected :D

Finally, the summer and winter trips. Keep your diaries open for the 1st - 4th January. After last year's success, we'll be organising another winter trip this year. We're still deciding on locations with Carlingford and Wales being mentioned. The trip will be a chance to get the adrenaline pumping during the grey winter months. Our summer trip destination is also still undecided. Last year we went to Les Gets, France for 10 days. The trip is definitely a highlight in our calender, with bigger and better trails. You'd be surprised how much your biking improves after a few consecutive days of biking.

That's all for now. If you have any questions or suggestions just post them up here. Hope to see you all around.
